The 8 Sunnah’s of Sleeping

 1) To Sleep After Isha Prayer

The prophet Muhammad (SAW) encouraged his companions not to be involved in any activity after Isha prayer. There are a number of benefits to doing this which include being able to wake up on time for Fajr prayer and also so one does not end up spending that time idly doing unproductive or in some cases haram things.

One should not sleep before the night prayer, nor have discussions after it.”Sahih Bukhari

 2) To Make Wudhu Before Going to Bed

One of the companions said that the Prophet (SAW) told him:

“Whenever you go to bed, perform ablution like that for the prayer, and lie on your right side”Sahih Muslim

 3) To Dust the Bed Three Times

The wisdom behind dusting ones bed/sleeping area before going to bed comes from the fact that there may be an instance where a bug/insect or something dirty has somehow made its way on your bed. Dusting it beforehand will increase your chances of removing it.

It has been reported that the Prophet (SAW) said:

“When any one of you goes to bed, he should take hold of the hem of his lower garment and then should clean (his bed) with the help of that and then should recite the name of Allāh”Sahih Muslim

 4) To Sleep on the Right Hand Side

A hadith mentioned in a previously also applies to this point.

One of the companions said that the Prophet (SAW) told him:

“Whenever you go to bed, perform ablution like that for the prayer, and lie on your right side”Sahih Muslim

 5) To Sleep Facing Qiblah

There is a difference of opinion on this point between scholars and schools of thought. We are of the following opinion.

 6) To Sleep with the Right Hand Under the Right Cheek

In a Hadith describing the way the prophet Muhammed (SAW) used to sleep, it says:

“When the Prophet (SAW) wants to go to sleep, he puts his right hand under his cheek”.Sahih Muslim

 7) To Brush the Teeth with Miswak

The use of Misak (Siwak) is more of a general sunnah of the Prophet Muhammed (SAW) and should be applied to before going to sleep as well. There are a numerous hadith that state the importance of it’s useage and we’ll list two of them below.

“Make a regular practice of Miswak for verily it is the purification for the mouth and a means of the pleasure of the Lord.”Sahih Bukhari & Muslim

Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamaan reported:

“When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, arose at night, he would clean his mouth with the toothstick (Siwak).”Sahih Bukhari & Muslim

 8) To Recite Various Dua’s & Surahs Before Sleeping

There are a number of Hadith which report what the Prophet Muhammed (SAW) used to read before going to sleep. It includes surah Israa (chapter 17), surah Zumar (chapter 39), the last 2 ayahs of surah Bakarah as well as what we’ve already mentioned (Dua before sleeping, Ayatul Kursi, surah Mulk & the four Quls).

If one has the time, we encourage you to read all of them.

It was narrated from Aa’ishah (RA) that when the Prophet (SAW) went to bed every night:

“he would hold his hands together and blow into them, and recite into them Qul Huwa Allaahu Ahad, Qul a’oodhu bi rabb il-falaq and Qul a’oodhu bi rabb il-naas. Then he would wipe them over whatever he could of his body, starting with his head and face and the front of his body, and he would do that three times”.Sahih Bukhari
