The Sunnah Way of Going to the Bathroom (Toilet)
Our blessed Prophet & messenger, Muhammed ﷺ was the greatest of all men. He is the ideal example of perfect character & has shown us how to how to live our lives as honorable Muslims in the form of his Sunnah. This includes how one should go to the bathroom.
We have been given the best etiquettes for relieving oneself & below we’ll go over 11 Sunnah of going to the bathroom (toilet).
1) Entering the Toilet with the Head Covered
Habib bin Saleh (R.A.) has reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the toilet: He would put on his shoes and cover his head.
2) To Enter the Toilet with Footware
The above hadith can also be applied to this point.

3) To Recite the Du’a before Entering the Toilet
Recite the following du’a before entering the toilet:
Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ
Transliteration: Allaahumma innee a’oodhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khabaa’ith.
English: O Allah, I seek refuge with you from all evil and evil-doers.

4) To Enter with the Left Foot
5) To Sit & Urinate
One should always sit and urinate. Never stand.
6) To Leave the Toliet with the Right Foot
When leaving the toilet:
7) To Recite the Du’a After Leaving the Toilet
The above hadith can also be applied to this point.
Recite the following Du’a when leaving the toilet:
Arabic: غُفْرَانَكَ اَلْحَمْدُ لِللَّهِ الَّذِيْ أَذْهَبَ عَنِّيْ الأَذّىَ وَ عَافَانِيْ
Transliteration: Ghufraanak. Alahmdulillahilladhee adh-haba annill adhaa wa’afaanee
English: O Allah. I seek your forgiveness. All praises are due to Allah who has
taken away from me the discomfort and granted me comfort

Ibn Abbas (R.A) reports that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
11) When Done, Cleanse Oneself with Water
One should cleanse private parts after relieving with water.
In regards to doing Isthinga and cleaning of the private parts, it should be done with the left hand. Your right hand should never be used to clean any of the private parts.
