The Fard & Wajib Acts of Hajj

What is Hajj?

Hajj is a holy pilgrimage that Muslims make once a year to the city of Makkah.

It is the fifth pillar of Islam and has been made obligatory for those Muslims who are mentally, physically & financially able.

As a Muslim it’s incredibly important for one to familiarize themselves with the fard of Hajj as if they are not fulfilled your Hajj will not be valid.

In this article we’ll cover the 3 Fardh as well as the 6 Wajib acts of Hajj.

 The 3 Fard of Hajj 

 1) Enter into Ihraam

Without Ihraam one cannot complete Hajj. Ihraam a sacred state which Muslims must take on in order carry out the required rituals to complete Hajj or Umrah. Men & women ihram differ:

  • A males ihram is 2 sheets of white cloth.
  • A females ihram is dress that completely conceals her expect it leaves her hands and face showing.

Furthermore, for the person preparing to enter ihram they must also make intention (niyah) of performing Hajj.

 2) Wuquf at Arafat

Wuquf at Arafat means to stay at Arafat after midday Zawal of the 9th Dhul Hijjah to the sunset of the 9th Dhul Hijjah.

Please note: Standing even for a moment, at any place of Arafah during that time is sufficient.

 3) Performing Tawaf Al-Ziyarah

Tawaful Al-Ziyarah is third fardh of Hajj and can be performed any time from the morning of the 10th Dhul Hijjah until the sunset of the 12th Dhul Hijjah.

Now let’s discuss the wajibaat of Hajj.

 The 6 Wajib Acts of Hajj 

There are six wajib in Hajj. If any of these are left out intentionally or inadvertently, it does not make the Hajj invalid, however, a penalty in the form of sacrificing an animal or sadaqah must be paid.

That said, if any wajibaat of Hajj are left out without a valid excuse no amount of sadaqah will suffice. It is a sin and your Hajj will not be valid.

 1) Wuqf at Muzdalifah

Staying at Muzalifah is done after Wuquf at Arafat. One should stay at Muzdalifah after sunset of the 9th Dhul Hijjah until the Fajr prayer of the 10th Dhul Hijjah.

 2) Sa’ey between Safa and Marwah

Doing Sa’ey of the mountains safa and marwah is another wajib act of Hajj and can be done with Tawaf Al-Ziyarah.

 3) Stoning the Devil at Jamraat

The stoning of the Jamraat should be done after the Fajr salah of 10th Dhul Hijjah.

 4) Sacrifice an Animal (Qurbani)

There are different types of Hajj so please note that only pilgrims who are performing Hajj Qiran or Hajj Tamattu have offer an animal sacrifice.

 5) Shaving the Head

After completing all the above fardh and wajib acts of hajj you should shave their head or cut it short. (The prophet (S.A.W) supplicated thrice for those who shave their heads and once for those who shorten their hair)

 6) Tawaful Wada

The farewell tawaf is only compulsory for those pilgrims who have come from abroad or outside the boundaries of Miqaat though it is still good practice for those who live within the boundaries to do this too.
