6 Sunnah of Drinking Water (Correct Etiquettes)

The Prophet (S.A.W) showed us over 1400 the correct etiquettes of drinking water.

Science has only caught up and found evidence to support that there is indeed a healthy way to drink water, Subhnallah!

Below we’ve outlined the 6 step process on how to drink water according to Islamic Sunnah.

6 Sunnah on how to drink water

Before we get into the sunnah, please note that the first thing you should do is ensure you can see the water you’re about to drink clearly.

Secondly, you should never drink from a big water container but instead pour the water into a glass and drink it from there. We know this because of the following hadith:

The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said:

“Do not drink directly from a water pitcher (or any water container)”.Bukhari

Now we can move onto talking about the 6 sunnah.

 1) Always Sit Down Before you Drink

Sitting down and drinking water is not only a sunnah but it’s also been proven by science that if you drink while standing it can cause harm to your body in the form of Gastrointestinal Tract (GIT) damage, kidney damage, nerve tension and more. So even if you’re in a rush try and sit down before you begin drinking.

The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said:

“Sit down and drink.”Muslim

 2) Always Drink with the Right Hand

Just as we are told to eat with our right hand, we should also drink water with our right hand even if one is left handed.

The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said:

“Never eat and drink with the left hand because Shaytaan (Satan) eats with the left hand.”Muslim

 3) Say ‘Bismillah’ Before you Begin

Bismillah means “In the name of Allah” and we’ve been told to recite this before we start any task which includes eating and drinking.

It reminds us that Allah (S.W.T) is our sole provider. We as humans would cease to exist if water wasn’t present.

The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said:

“When commencing to drink first recite Bismillah.”Tirmidhi

 4) Drink the Water in 3 Sips & Breaths

While drinking the water do the following:

  1. Take 3 sips.
  2. Take a breath in between each sip.
  3. Move the cup away after each sip.

The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said:

“Do not drink water only in one breath, but drink it in two or three breaths.”Bukhari & Muslim

 5) Do Not Breathe into the Glass

Do not breathe into the glass (or wherever you’re drinking from) after a sip! You should move it away after each sip and then take the next one.

 6) Finish by Saying ‘Alhamdulillah’

Do not forget to say Alhamdulillah after you’re done drinking.

Alhamdulillah means ‘Praise be to Allah’.
